What You Should Know About Puppy & Kitten Care

Young puppies and kittens should receive their physical examination and first set of vaccinations at 6 to 9 weeks of age. Additional exams and vaccinations are given every 2 to 4 weeks until they are 15 to 16 weeks old. For adult pets, vaccination protocols will be based on your pet's lifestyle, exposure, and risk factors. During your pet's initial examinations you will also receive behavioral advice, nutritional counseling, and recommendations on disease prevention. This valuable information can prevent future medical problems and lead to a happier, healthier pet.

What happens during my pet’s first vet visit?

  • Weighing the puppy/kitten
  • Checking heart and lungs
  • Temperature check
  • Skin and fur check
  • Eye check
  • Teeth and mouth check
  • Vaccinations (if appropriate)
  • Scheduling future appointments for important early life events (vaccinations, spay/neuter, etc.)

Core Vaccinations

There are several “core” vaccinations that all puppies and kittens need. For puppies, the core vaccines are DAPP and rabies:

For kittens, the core vaccinations include FVRCP and rabies:

  • Rabies

There are several other vaccinations recommended for puppies and kittens that are not part of the “core” set. Our team will tell you more about these vaccinations and other important health and wellness information for puppies and kittens.
